About

Carson Peters and Iron Mountain

Carson Peters and Iron Mountain has quickly become one of the most energetic and hottest bluegrass bands in the business, making numerous trips to the Grand Ole Opry and multiple international appearances. Their traditional bluegrass style and a cappella arrangements are a refreshing reminder that the bluegrass of old is alive and well. The band is made up of Carson and Jamie Peters, a father and son duo from Piney Flats, TN, along with another father and son duo in Ben and Eric Marshall, from Mount Airy, NC, Austin Tate, from Marion, VA, and James McDowell, from Hendersonville, NC. The boys give God all the glory for allowing them to accomplish what they have, and trust his plan to guide them through the future.

Carson Peters

At only 18 years old, Carson has made the most of his young career. In 2011, 8-year-old Carson made a guest appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, in which he performed for Leno and Betty White. A few years later, in 2014, Ricky Skaggs made one of Peters’ biggest dreams a reality, inviting him to perform “Blue Moon of Kentucky” at the Grand Ole Opry. Carson has made several trips back to the Opry since. In 2016, Peters made the trip back to L.A. to be a guest on NBC’s “Little Big Shots with Steve Harvey”. In 2018, Skaggs once again invited Carson back to Nashville, this time to perform at the 52nd CMA Awards Show, during Skaggs’ Country Music Hall of Fame induction performance. Most recently, in 2021, Peters was a contestant on NBC’s “The Voice”, and received a coveted 4-chair-turn with his rendition of the Don Williams classic, “Tulsa Time”. Peters chose to continue his journey on the show with coach Blake Shelton, getting to work with Dierks Bentley and Ed Sheeran in the following rounds of the competition. Carson is currently touring with his band, Iron Mountain, but is also touring as a solo artist playing classic country music. Peters gives all the praise to God for the opportunities he has been blessed with.

Austin Tate

Austin Tate, from Marion, Virginia, is 23 years old and plays the mandolin and sings for the band.  He began playing music at 8 years old.  His taste in music ranges from classic rock and old country to bluegrass and gospel.  He has played for many local churches, nursing homes and restaurants.  He has had some great opportunities to play music with some amazing bluegrass artists, including the Queen of Bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent.  Off the bluegrass scene, Austin enjoys spending time with his wife and children watching dirt track racing .  Austin says that the most important thing to him is his relationship with God. Tate praises God for giving him the ability to play music and blessing him with a wonderful, supportive family.

Ben Marshall

Going to his first bluegrass festival at 18 months old, Ben Marshall truly grew up surrounded by music!  Stories of Ben being held by his father on stage as the elder would play and sing, show how the seed was planted.  Ben first started playing at 8 years old.  He told his dad he wanted to play, so Eric sat Ben on a picnic table at Galax Fiddler’s Convention, stood a bass fiddle up in front of him and there’s been no looking back!  With his God-given talent, Ben quickly became known for flawless timing and taste as an anchor for the music he played.  Once comfortable with playing, Ben started singing lead and harmony; adding to his abilities as a performer.  Soon, Ben started playing with the youth group, Oldgrass, which has received numerous awards and realized vast exposure.  Now 21 years old, Ben continues to share a love for bluegrass and gospel music as he currently plays lead guitar and sings as a member of Iron Mountain.

Eric Marshall

Eric Marshall, who plays bass in the band, was born and raised in Mount Airy, North Carolina, and has loved to sing from his earliest memories.  Raised in a region known for its traditional music, it was natural for him to be drawn to bluegrass.  In his early 20’s, Eric started playing banjo with his brother in The Marshall Brothers and Highroad Band.  Over the past 20 years, Eric has worn almost every hat possible in a bluegrass band; from band leader to side musician, but he is best known as a traditional style musician, vocalist and songwriter.  In 2010, Eric’s son, Ben, joined him on stage for the first time and started a new path for Eric’s musical journey as a father/son duet where his new name was simply “Ben’s Daddy!”  These days, Eric continues to share his talent and style of bluegrass music as he performs with Iron Mountain.

Jamie Peters

Jamie Peters, the rhythm guitarist for the band, has loved music from the day he was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee. He first picked up a guitar when he was 8 years old, and played regularly until leaving for college. However, Jamie picked back up the six-string when his son, Carson, began to show an interest in music. This sparked the father/son duo that has been in multiple bands together for 13 years. When Jamie is not playing music, you can find him turning wrenches in his garage or spending time with his wife, Robin, and his son, Carson. Jamie thanks God for the opportunity to play music with his son and his dear friends that make up Carson Peters and Iron Mountain.

James McDowell

James McDowell, the newest addition to the group, was born in Henderson County, North Carolina. His music roots run deep. His grandfather, James 'Coot' McDowell, played for the "Southern Mountaineers" and the "Green River Boys" and has been a large influence on his music. James attended homeschool, and focused extra time on music. He began guitar lessons at age 13 and banjo lessons at age 14, from Ken Schoewe. At age 15, McDowell was invited to play with the "Old Time Pickers" by Sam Cox, who continues to mentor James. He has also served as banjo player for the "Mully Holler Gang". James has participated in competitions, near and far. He placed 2nd in the RenoFest banjo competition and 6th in the guitar competition. In addition to playing music, James enjoys spending time with his family. He is also very active in church at Crab Creek Baptist, where he serves as a leader in the Awana program. He also enjoys hunting, fishing and studying history.
